Happy Graduation! An older person’s perspective on life!
Graduation day—what a moment! There's something magical about that cap and gown moment, whether it’s high school, college, military boot camp, or a technical program. It marks the end of one chapter and the start of another. Families cheer, cameras flash, and dreams feel like they’re taking flight. But once the applause fades and the cake is gone, it’s time for a real conversation.
Because here’s the truth: a debt-free education is one of the greatest gifts we can give the next generation.
In today’s world, graduates have more options than ever. College is a fantastic path for some, especially if scholarships or financial support make it accessible without massive debt. But let’s be honest—college isn’t the only route to success. Technical and trade programs are booming, and many of them offer skills that are not only in high demand but also come with excellent starting salaries, often higher than what some college graduates make.
And then there are those who need a break. The ones who want to work, travel, or simply breathe before jumping into the next commitment. That’s okay too. Taking time doesn’t mean giving up—it means being thoughtful about the future.
We live in a time when too many young adults are drowning in student loan debt, burdened with bills they can't afford, and degrees that haven’t led to the jobs they hoped for. The pressure to “go to college no matter what” has created a generation of twenty-somethings who are struggling just to make ends meet.
So, if your graduate tells you they’re thinking of doing something different, listen. Really listen!
Encourage them to explore all their options. Celebrate their courage to walk their own path. The end goal isn't just a degree—it's a life they can be proud of, one step at a time, without the heavy weight of regret or debt.
